Life as a mother of young children can sometimes put a pause on everything else, especially when it comes to exercise. Chan Ming May, mother of three young ones, can attest to that. Between juggling work and her three children, Ming May hardly found the time to exercise. Unfortunately, this has taken a toll on her health. “I used to be very active and was into competitive swimming. But since having my kids, I became inactive and started putting on weight,” she says.
Determined not to let her health slide, Ming May made a promise to be more active. That’s when she decided to join AIA Vitality, which she credits for her now healthier lifestyle. It was her sister who signed her up for the programme, having seen the health benefits herself. “Thanks to AIA Vitality, I started going for regular swimming sessions with my friends and even fun runs,” says Ming May.
She also started noticing the changes – losing weight and becoming more alert at work, which helps out with stress. Ming May discovered a newfound perspective on why it is important to stay active. Eventually, the programme became such a constant in her life that she is now highly motivated to be more consistent with her exercise routine.
So much so that Ming May is confident that her health has vastly improved. “I’ve not done a health check for a long time but due to this programme, I am sure that my health is better now that I plan to make an appointment for a check soon,” says the mother.
While the programme offers rewards that encourage Ming May to work harder towards her health goals, she says that the biggest benefit is being able to spend quality time with her family while getting active.
“Sure, the motivation from being rewarded with free movie tickets is great but I now have something the entire family can do – exercise. It sets a good example to my children and I hope to make it a regular family activity when they get older as well,” says Ming May.
Aside from the regular exercise bonding time, Ming May also spends more time with her husband and friends taking part in fun runs. “In the previous Men’s Health Women’s Health Night Run, I got tickets for myself, my husband and friends. We went together and completed the 5km run. It was a great way to start small and hopefully I can do more the next time. I’m definitely keen on trying more runs,” says Ming May.
With the right motivation, Ming May has discovered that good health and family can come together, bringing her a more balanced and complete life.
