Step aside, Disneyland. Who says you have to travel to an exotic destination or splurge to have the best family holiday? The Klang Valley is full of fantastic (and sometimes free) experiences for the family. You just need to know where to look!
If you have yet to plan for a holiday highlight for your kids, here are some exciting ways to get the whole family up and about. The best part is, they’re all located in the Klang Valley, so you do not have to travel too far. We’ve also got a few affordable alternatives for the family. Read on and let us know if we’ve missed out on a place!
The Parenthood touts itself as the largest family park in Malaysia. The one-stop shop for all things baby, toddler, child and family, have one outlet in Sunway Pyramid and another in Sunway Putra Mall. There is a pre-school on site, together with shopping, dining, salon and fitness options – all under one roof, which makes it a great place for parents to run some errands while keeping their children occupied. The Parenthood Playland is one of the main features here, a multi-level jungle gym popular among children under the age of 12.

Ideal for: Families with children 15 and under
Funtopia believes in the importance of having fun in the pursuit of fitness and a healthy life. You’ll see this is evident through their themed and brightly coloured climbing walls and games incorporated into climbing challenges. Trained staff are also on hand to provide a tutorial before the climb, giving parents peace of mind as the little ones climb giraffe, scale a tall tree, and conquer the top of a building. Funtopia is located in Courtyard shopping mall, SS15.

The perfect way to tire out your hyperactive children – by letting them jump, tumble and dive to their heart’s content. Jumpstreet is a first of its kind trampoline park, boasting hundreds of interconnected trampolines, all the way up to its walls, providing maximum surface area for kids to bounce off of. KL-ites can head to Jumpstreet in Petaling Jaya while those in the south i.e. Johor Bahru can head to Jumpstreet Austin Heights.

This post-apocalyptic themed entertainment park, District 21 is located within IOI City Mall, Putrajaya. Although popular among children (especially as a birthday party venue), the theme park is also a hit among teenagers and adults – which makes it ideal for a family outing! If mummy and daddy do not feel like joining in to play, they can opt for an admission ticket which is a fraction of the full ticket price. Bonus: IOI City Mall is also home to an indoor ice skating rink!

It’s BYOB (that’s Bring Your Own Bike) Sundays at Jaya One. From morning till late afternoon, kids are allowed to cycle in the indoor area of Jaya One. What a unique and healthy way to make use of mall space! Occasionally there would also be some fun, games or an entertainer making an appearance at this event. You can either BYOB or borrow a bike from the reception.

Ideal for: Families with children 12 and under
Every Sunday morning, Publika closes its inner roads from vehicular traffic to for its Wheelie Sundays. This is when the public come out in full gear to cycle, whether on the two wheels of a bicycle, rollerblades or skateboards. Bicycle rentals are also available if it’s a chore to bring your bikes. Families, friends and young ones alike can pedal in the safety of the inner compound of Publika before retreating to one of its many cafes and restaurants for a hearty brunch. Pro tip: Publika is also home to a variety of child-centric retail outlets. Check out Benbino, a child-friendly café with a custom-built playground, or Little Spa Kingdom for toddler spa, massage and manicure sessions.

Ideal for: Families with children of all ages
Similar to Publika’s Wheelie Sundays, but on a larger scale. Kuala Lumpur has its car-free Sundays every first and third Sundays of the month, where a stretch of road measuring 6km are closed off to vehicles from 7.30am to 9.30am. Here, the public is welcome to jog, run, skate, cycle from Jalan Raja Laut through the Golden Triangle of Berjaya Times Square, Bukit Bintang, KLCC and Pavilion KL. Bring your kids and their bikes, some sunscreen, water and snacks – it’ll be sure to be a fun day out in the city, whether they choose to bike or run.

Ideal for: Families with children of all ages
SkyTrex is an adventure park in Shah Alam offering a unique way to experience the outdoors – via canopy jungle trekking. The circuit throughout this park is located high up in the trees, which weave in and out of the jungle via ladders, steps and flying foxes. The different levels of difficulty and child-friendly circuits make it a suitable holiday highlight for the whole family. There are also SkyTrex branches in Melaka and Langkawi, so you can add a little fitness fun when travelling in those areas, too.

Ideal for: Families with children of all ages
The “City in a Garden” concept for Putrajaya comes alive through Putrajaya Botanical Gardens, a sprawling landscape made up of five themed areas. You and your brood can walk through trails, past the great lake, and identify over 700 species of flora. Put an educational spin on the outing by bringing along a sketchbook, colour pencils and a stool for your little ones, so they can sketch the various species of plants they see along the way. Bonus: There is also a statuesque Moroccan Pavilion tucked in the corner of the garden, ideal for photo-taking and general knowledge on Moroccan architecture. The entrance fee of RM3 gains you access to all 18,000 square feet of the pavilion, which was built in parts by skilled villagers in Morocco, brought to Malaysia and assembled by Moroccan artisans.

Just a hop and a skip from the KL Tower lies KL Forest Eco Park (formerly known as the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve), the city’s remaining virgin tropical rain forest! Go on walking trails and check out the herb garden at the park. The highlight within this natural green lung is undoubtedly the 200m Canopy Walk, bringing visitors to great heights as they walk among trees and treetops.

The Rift is a modern entertainment theme park that features the latest in Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality technology games. Here, visitors can participate in multi-player free-roaming VR games in virtual worlds, climb a HoloWall, or strap themselves into a VR “roller coaster” ride. The Rift brings a physical side to video games and is suitable for teens, while also catering for young ones through The Rift Junior (package/ or programme).

Nurture your child’s interest in animals and all things aquatic at Aquaria KLCC. The oceanarium in KLCC features over 5,000 species of marine life and marine mammals. While it makes for a fun outing for the whole family, there are also child-centric educational workshops available.

Farm in the City, as its name suggests, gives visitors a chance to experience farm life in the city. Located in Sri Kembangan, this attraction features a free-flight aviary, a petting zoo and a feeding point, all great opportunities for your child to encounter animals up close and learn about their nature.
