Showing up for a new workout class, especially one that involves a real pair of boxing gloves can be exciting and a little nerving – will I be able to perform the exercise or will I just be throwing random punches in the air? This was just one of the many questions running through Hann’s mind as the trainer methodically guided her on how to put on the hand wrap securely around both her hands and wrists, to get her ready for BOOM.
Boom is a music driven, high intensity, boxing inspired fitness regimen offered exclusively by Fitness First at 1 Mont’ Kiara. Equipped with advanced facilities and workout gears, Fitness First provides highly professional trainers to conduct these sessions, aimed at giving one an all-out, holistic workout experience.
Hann, who works in the insurance industry, take 2 days out in a week to hit the gym. Apart from following regular exercise routines, Hann wanted to attempt a different form of workout so she decided to kick it up a notch with BOOM. “I’ve always wanted to try to try this!” she said smiling as the class set out to begin.
Hann describes her first class as exceeding her expectations. “It was more intense than I thought it would be as I believed it would only entail boxing. I thought it would be a lot like Body Combat, which involves a lot of stamina but doesn’t include so much strength. Boom, on the other hand, includes squats, long range jumps, push ups and sit ups; making it a pretty intense workout. Also, this was the first time I had boxing gloves on and we had real punching bags.”
Speaking on what she enjoyed most about this workout session, Hann is quick to point out how despite being a rigorous exercise routine, the trainer was able to guide them with patience and ease.
“Even though, it’s fast-paced and you’re learning it on-the-go, the class is small which allows the trainer to help you throughout the session. In moments when I felt I could do it, I would and when I felt I couldn’t, I would just pause. The trainer was very encouraging and patient.”
“The best thing about the exercise itself?” Hann continues, “Is getting to release tension because you are actually punching something. In other classes, you’re punching the air. In this one there’s a real punching bag so you can feel the impact. It’s a good workout for releasing stress and getting things off your mind.”
“It definitely helps with coordination as you have to remember the moves and perform them in the right sequence. It activates your brain,” explains Hann.
“If you’re a very right-handed person you have to turn around and make use of your left hand as well, which helps you to strengthen the muscles that are weaker. Compared to weight training where sometimes you’re using barbells, you’re always pushing through with your stronger arm, your stronger side which can cause a muscle imbalance. So, if you do boxing, you can engage your body properly and fix your muscle imbalances in the long term.”
“The workout also involves exercising the entire body from head to toe so, it’s beneficial for those who want to lose weight overall or tone their whole body, unlike other ordinary exercises that only focus on some parts of the body.”
“Yes, sure!” responds Hann enthusiastically. “Especially if someone who enjoys boxing they should definitely try it.
