New to paying taxes and unsure where to start? You've come to the right place. Let's take it step-by-step.
So, your first working year is over and it's time to file your
income taxes before the deadline.
The first question you may have is "Where do I begin?".
Hint: Right here.
Before we begin, let's find out if you need to pay income tax. To qualify as a taxable individual, you need to be a resident of Malaysia, and either:
If you meet the requirements, then you'll need to file your taxes.
You'll need to register with Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri (LHDN) and be assigned an income tax number. You can do this via two ways:
After 3 days, LHDN will email your income tax number to you.
Now that you're in the system, it's time to set up your online account for paying taxes. Your first step will be to get a PIN, and there are two ways to do it:
Once you have your PIN, head over to ezHazil. Select "First Time login" and fill out your account details. Then, it's time to declare your taxes!
If you're an employee of a company, you'll receive your EA form from your finance department – so have it ready.
A) Start by picking the right tax form for your situation:
B) Select the year of assessment and confirm all your details.
C) Fill in your statuary income. This will be listed on your EA form. If you've worked at multiple places in the last year, total up the amount from all the EA forms.
It's now time to get some money back in your pocket! Your gross income is subject to a list of tax reliefs. If you qualify for any of these, you can claim them.
Here are some of the important ones to note this year:
*TIP: You can download your AIA premium statements via the My AIA app anytime, anywhere!
Keep the receipts for everything you've claimed somewhere safe. You are required to provide them if LHDN requests for them.
And that's it – you've filled your very first income tax
