Do we need supplements?
Many of us are unaware that supplements are only necessary for people with a nutrient deficiency or are prone to a nutrient deficiency. For example, those who practice vegetarian/vegan diets are at a higher risk of vitamin B12 deficiency as it is not available in plant-based food. People with an increased nutrient requirement such as pregnant women or elderly might also require supplements. However, for the vast majority of us, the path to good health is a balanced diet, with emphasis on fruits and vegetables. That being said, supplements are meant to fill the nutrition gap, not to replace actual food. Our body absorbs nutrients better from food, hence a healthy diet should always be the priority. Furthermore, supplements may provide more than what our body needs and the extra nutrients would be passed out when we go to the toilet!
What should I do instead?
Enjoy a healthy well-balanced diet! Include various types of whole grains, lean proteins, healthy fats, fruits and vegetables into your diet to get the nutrients your body needs! With this, you don’t need the extra supplements.
Tips for a healthy and nutrient-rich diet!
